Is Age Just a Number? Not Really!

Ever catch yourself contemplating whether age truly is just a number? Well, it turns out, it’s a bit more complex than that. Aging isn’t just about the passing years; it’s also about how our bodies respond to those years. And believe it or not, those responses often come with a numerical tag.

From the steady decline in total energy expenditure, roughly about 0.7 percent per year once you hit your sixties and beyond, to the shifts in muscle mass, weight, heart rate, blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides – it’s like a numerical symphony, each note indicating the passage of time and its effects on our bodies.

Here is the kicker…

Amidst all these numerical fluctuations, there’s one vital number that often goes unmeasured – Skeletal Muscle Mass. It’s like the silent guardian of our physical well-being, quietly supporting our strength and functional ability as we age. Yet, age-related muscle loss threatens this balance, leading to a decline in strength and increasing the risk of falls and chronic health conditions.

Picture this …

You’re in your golden years, but your body feels like it’s betraying you. Tasks that were once simple become daunting challenges, and the fear of losing independence looms ever closer. But is this decline inevitable? Till what age do you want to maintain your autonomy and vitality? The answer, my friend, lies in the choices you make today.

Developing a body that moves well, is pain-free, and allows you to embrace life to its fullest is the ultimate goal. It’s about feeling capable, confident, and free as you age, without regrets or limitations. Imagine being more energetic, more empowered, and proud of the lifestyle you’ve cultivated over the years. And most importantly, envision retaining your independence, the cornerstone of a fulfilling life in your golden years.

As humans, movement is our language – it’s how we express ourselves, connect with others, and engage with the world around us. When we move well, we live well. Modern medicine may prolong our lifespan, but it’s the quality of those years that truly matters. Enter health span – the measure of how well we live, not just how long.

Now you might be thinking

“But I’ve already crossed the threshold of youth. Is it too late for me?” Absolutely not! While establishing healthy habits early on certainly pays dividends, it’s never too late to start. Whether it’s making smarter nutrition choices, incorporating regular exercise into your routine, or prioritizing mental well-being, every positive action counts.

Lets bust a common myth while we are at it …

Aging isn’t solely determined by the passing years. Much of what we attribute to aging is actually a culmination of lifestyle habits accumulated over time. That spare tire around your midsection? It’s not just a byproduct of age; it’s often the result of years of poor dietary choices and sedentary behavior.

But fear not, for there’s hope on the horizon. Regular exercise has been linked to lower rates of Alzheimer’s, dementia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, arthritis, depression, anxiety, and overall mortality. It’s the ultimate prescription for a longer, healthier life.

To wrap up …

So, if you find yourself pondering the inevitable march of time, reflect on your current habits and consider making positive changes. Remember, age may be a number, but how you choose to live each day determines the richness of your health span. It’s never too late to invest in yourself and embrace the journey of healthy aging.

And by the way…

I highly recommend watching the documentary ‘Live to 100’ on Netflix. It offers invaluable insights and inspiration to help you make the most of your journey towards longevity and vitality.

Here’s to embracing the journey of aging with strength, vitality, and purpose!
